Newport Beach Film Festival
Written by 2015 Miss Friendship Tracy Jung
April 27, 2015 was the Newport Beach Film Festival Asian Showcase. The Miss Los Angeles Court was super excited to attend this event. Once the court arrive to the Edwards Big Newport 6 Theatre, they were informed the Chinese film Don't Go Breaking My Heart 2 wasn’t able to play due to technical difficulties. Disappointed that the movie wasn't able to be seen, they were given two options to see either the Japanese film called "Twilight: Saya in Sasara" or the Korean film “A Hard Day" instead of "Don't go Breaking My Heart 2". They decided to watch the Korean Action film. Before entering the theater, the court was able to converse amongst directors, screen writers, actors and actress. There was a live Korean drum circle performance by UCLA Hanoolim Poongmul. Jumping with joy to have movie night, the court purchased popcorn and icees. As the court found their seats, they notice the theater was updated with reclining seats, and tables with cup holes. They couldn't wait for the movie; it was filled with suspense action, and laugher. After exiting the movie theater, the court was provided a survey about the movie. There was no hesitation it was a thumbs up and definitely recommend movie to watch. After turning in the survey, the courts received a Limited edition chocolate biscuit pocky treat. With all the adrenaline from the movie, the court headed to Design Within Reach for the after party. Arriving to the event, the court was greeted by traditional Chinese lion dancing. The Miss Los Angeles Chinatown court has a wonderful time enjoying good company, experience different cultures/ performance coming together, witnessing live art painting being created, taking selfies at the photobooth and trying delicious food samples from RA, Iron Press, and many more restaurant venues.
CBS-KCAL Interview
Written by 2015 Queen Alice Wong
There’s nothing better greeting the early Sunday morning than with clear skies and no chance of rain. At least that’s what Reporter/Meteorologist Amber Lee from KCAL 9 News informed the general viewers of Los Angeles. As the Court and I made our way to the CBS-KCAL Station in Studio City, we were ecstatic to be on live television to talk about the upcoming community events the Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Business Improvement District has in store for the next few months. Amber and Amy Johnson were the reporters for the morning news segment and before going live on air, we had a brief opportunity to chat. They are so down to earth, beautiful and energetic when they spoke with the Vivian, Tiffany, Tracy and me. One hop, skip and a flash, we were washed out with lights in front of a camera with Amber standing right by our side. We talked about the history of Miss Los Angeles Chinatown and what it means to be a Chinese American Ambassador for our reign. That was a great segway to talk about our pending two week Goodwill Ambassadors trip to China in May. We also talked about the super exciting Chinatown Summer Nights happening the last Saturday of the summer months where there will be awesome live bands, diverse food options, bars and a vintage goods market. It was a great opportunity to talk about the revitalization of Chinatown for food, transit, cultural display and art. As one of the largest network-owned station group in the country, it is certainly impressive. A very kind Mr. Ernest not only gave us free and reliable travel advice for our upcoming to China, he also gave us a tour around the station; that was after our really long photo shoot on the KCAL 9 morning news was over. It was fascinating to see the consolidation of teams and technology to have multiple networks churning out material everyday, all day. Divided among networks, then sports, daytime television, commercials and infomercials, it gave great insight on the life of those in broadcast. It truly seems like there’s never a dull day in the station, as things can happen on the fly and when things get moving, there’s a buzz to the energy. I’m so glad to have this opportunity to not only say that I was on live TV but also to really get the word out about the changing schematic of Chinatown. The town might be getting a bit of a face-lift, but there’s still the heritage, the people and the legacy to keep the strong Chinese spirit when sharing with all visitors.
